PARIS
The Supreme Court in Paris has slapped fines on the French police after finding it guilty of discriminating on racial grounds against black and Arab-origin youths during its practice of demanding identity checks.
The apex court agreed Wednesday that a young man of Arab origin and several black youngsters were unjustly harassed by the police on the pretext of identity checks. Each of the teenagers will be paid €1,500, the court said.
According to the Le Monde, the trial began in July 2013 and the Supreme Court arrived on a verdict Wednesday.
The court’s decision was made on the appeal of five out of 13 youngsters who filed a lawsuit after the police subjected them to discriminatory identity checks and body searches.
