A food warehouse in Ukraine’s northern Brovary city destroyed in Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine could lead to an ecological disaster, Ukrainian authorities warned on Tuesday.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry took journalists to the cooling warehouse in Brovary, which was destroyed by a Russian airstrike on March 13.

Igor Saposhka, the mayor of the city, told Anadolu Agency that 50,000 tons of food, mainly fish, chicken meat, and fruits, in the warehouse were destroyed in the strike.

He said authorities are trying to clear the destroyed food so that an ecological disaster does not occur in the region.

In a statement, officials at the food center said a foul smell of the rotten food permeated the air around the area, adding the mess could lead to an ecological disaster if it rains or the weather warms up.

Members of the press are visiting humanitarian aid centers located in Brovary and structures destroyed by Russian airstrikes.

Russia’s war on Ukraine has met with international outrage, with the EU, US, and the UK, among others, implementing tough financial sanctions on Moscow.

At least 1,179 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 1,860 injured, according to estimates by the UN, which cautioned that the true figure is likely far higher.

More than 3.9 million Ukrainians have also fled to several European countries, with millions more displaced inside the country, according to the UN refugee agency.
