CAIRO
The death toll from the Tuesday bombing of a security building in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura has risen to 16, the Egyptian Health Ministry said Wednesday.
The explosion, which rocked the Daqahliya Security Directorate early Tuesday, also left around 100 people injured.
"Thirty-one of the injured are being treated in hospitals in Mansoura and Cairo," ministry spokesman Ahmed Kamel told Anadolu Agency, adding that some were in critical condition.
The Interior Ministry has suggested that the explosion occurred when a suicide bomber drove a car laden with explosives into the security directorate.
The attack took place almost three weeks before Egypt will hold a referendum on the amended 2012 constitution in mid-January.
The upcoming vote is the first phase of an army-imposed roadmap for political transition after the July 3 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi. The plan also includes parliamentary and presidential elections sometime next year.
