Canada reverses possibility of paying $1B to join Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’

TRENTON, Canada

Canada will not pay US$1 billion to join America’s “Board of Peace,” its finance minister said Tuesday.

Francois-Philippe Champagne said while the framework on the board is not complete, Canada has hit the stop button on the fee.

"There [are] a lot of details to be worked out, but one thing, which is clear, is that Canada is not going to pay if we were to join the Board of Peace," Champagne told reporters in Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.

It marks a reversal of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s acceptance Monday of a draft invitation to the board. But Canada may join the Trump administration’s Board of Peace if the fee is dropped.

“We're still early days [into] that what's going to be the terms of reference of that board, how it's going to operate," said Champagne, CBC News reported.

"The prime minister will have to make the final decision when all the facts are known and all the details have been hammered out — whether this is in the best interest of Canada."

Carney said money is needed for the beleaguered in the Gaza Strip.

"Canada wants money to have maximum impact," Carney told reporters. "We still do not have unimpeded humanitarian aid flows at scale to the people of Gaza."

US President Donald Trump invited 60 world leaders to join the board.

Some leaders fear that the Board of Peace would handle more global conflicts and could potentially usurp the UN.
