ALEPPO
Syrian armed opposition forces have captured Aleppo's central prison on Thursday, which was under the control of the Syrian regime, releasing around 3,500 detainees.
The detainees, which were released by the Islamic Front and the Jabhat al Nusra, include women and children and have been taken to ‘safe zones’.
The prison is surrounded by Assad regime helicopters, which are using barrel bombs, an unnamed source told the Anadolu Agency on Thursday.
Among those freed were political detainees who had been held since the start of the protests against Assad's regime in 2011.
Meanwhile, around 350 of the detainees at the prison were released last December, after 10 froze to death.
