Syria: Barrel bomb attacks kill 29, injure 40 in Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria

At least 29 people were killed and 40 others were injured on Saturday in barrel bomb attacks carried out by the Syrian regime in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, according to humanitarian and local sources.

The Syria Civil Defense (SCD) group said the regime dropped at least four explosives-filled barrels during the attacks. Casualties included a number of women and children.

Several buildings and trucks were also heavily damaged in the attacks, the SCD added.

Barrel bombs are improvised explosives typically consisting of a barrel filled with explosive material and shrapnel. They are usually dropped from helicopters, but they are unguided, hence causing mass casualties.

According to the UN, more than 220,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began in 2011 between the regime of Bashar al-Assad and armed opposition groups.
