BERLIN
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that it is not a secret that she supports with the potential candidacy of Jean-Claude Juncker for the EU Commission presidency.
Merkel who received Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel at the German Chancellery in Berlin, said during the press conference that Germany and Luxembourg were closely linked by economy, politics and culture.
She said that they want to move forward on the issue of the banking union and to move forward by closer cooperation in the Euro zone, adding, "We have a common interest that Europe and the Euro zone continues to grow."
Merkel noted that the European People’s party (EPP) will decide on the candidacy of Juncker on March 6th and 7th in Dublin and underlined that it was very important that Junckers home country support his candidacy.
Xavier Bettel said on the possible candidacy of Juncker, "I have also confirmed to Merkel that the Luxembourg government is behind the candidacy of Juncker."
