An American doctor working in Pakistan is on life support after being shot in the southern port city of Karachi on Thursday.
Police said Dr. Deborah Lobo, 55, was shot in her face and head on a busy road, during daylight hours.
Lobo has been serving as the vice principal of the privately-run Jinnah Medical and Dental College in Karachi, according to Aurugnzeb Khattak, a city police official.
“She was alone in her car when she was shot at,” said Khattak, adding that Dr. Lobo was shot twice. “She has been living in Karachi for the last several years. We are trying to find out more details about her stay in Pakistan.”
Dr. Lobo was immediately taken to a local hospital where doctors described her condition as “very critical.”
She has been put on a life support system, hospital officials said.
The U.S. embassy in Pakistan has said that it is investigating the shooting and is in contact with Pakistani authorities.
