Two Australians of Turkish descent have been elected councillors in Melbourne.
14 Australians of Turkish descent from 7 different councils took part in the local elections in Melbourne.
According to unofficial results, Ozturk Yildiz from Moreland Municipality and Adem Atmaca from Hume Municipality have been re-elected councillors.
Between Turkish descent candidates it has been assessed that these local elections was the most unsuccessful electoral results of the past decade as only 2 of them were elected among 14 candidates who were vying for becoming councillors from 7 different areas.
Every municipality in Australia is formed by different electoral districts. The number of councillors from these districts is being sent to municipality varies. Every city council has different numbers of councillors however usually municipalities are managed by 10 of them. After the elections, councillors decide on their mayor and they also decide on the durations of mayor too. However mainly the mayorship is limited with one year.
Australians of Turkish descent have been elected mayors six times in the past decade. Adem Atmaca and Ozturk Yildiz were former mayors.
