Turkish Minister of Development Cevdet Yilmaz said, "Turkey have been successful over alleviating poverty. In 2006, one USD per capital income was cleared. Daily income of 3-4 percent of the population was under 2,15 USD, when the current government took power and today it went down to 0.2 percent. Daily income of the 30 percent of the population was under 4.30 USD in 2002 and now it decreased to 3.7 percent."
Speaking at the Fifth International Parliamentarians' Conference in Istanbul, Yilmaz stated that alleviating poverty is one of the government's service and he said, "We are aiming for clearing off the poverty in Turkey."
Minister of Development also said, "Turkey did not just grow economically. In the past decade, it became more equitable. Fighting against poverty took an important part in the distribution of the income. Turkey achieved a big goal, women and youth joined the economic and social life. Turkey made reforms in democracy and human rights."
"We need a fresh and new development strategy and model. We have to work on the new projects of improvements," Yilmaz said.
Meanwhile, Minister Yilmaz met separately with Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Babatunde Osotimehin and Danish Minister of Development Cooperation Friis Bach in Istanbul as part of the Fifth International Parliamentarians' Conference.
Both meetings lasted half an hour each and were closed to the press.
