Tunisia toppled 10-man Nigeria 1-0 in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16 match Sunday to face Burkina Faso in the quarterfinals.

Tunisian forward Youssef Msakni scored a long-range goal in the 47th minute in the northern city of Garoua in Cameroon. Msakni's low shot beat Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

Nigeria had a more difficult task once Super Eagles winger Alexander Iwobi was shown a red card in the 66th minute.

The Nigerian national team came in third in the previous Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 which was held in Egypt. The Super Eagles won the title in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

Nicknamed the Eagles of Carthage, Tunisia were the 2004 AFCON champions.

Earlier Sunday, Burkina Faso beat Gabon 7-6 on penalties to reach the last eight in Cameroon.

After regular time in the match in Limbe ended 1-1, neither team could score the winner in extra time, so a penalty shootout decided the winning team.
