ISTANBUL 

Thailand started strong in the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship on Saturday, racking up a crucial 3-2 win over Türkiye. 

The Thai national team won the Pool B clash with 25-17, 29-31, 25-22, 19-25, and 13-15 sets at Gelredome in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

Türkiye on Tuesday is due to face South Korea for their second match.

In another Group B match, Poland on Friday tasted a 3-1 victory against Croatia.

A half-dozen cities, including Lodz, Gliwice, and Gdansk in Poland, plus the Dutch cities of Rotterdam, Arnhem, and Apeldoorn, are hosting the matches.

Nations that complete their groups in the top four places will move to round two.

The tournament will see second-round matches on Oct. 4-9 with two groups consisting of eight teams each.

After the second-round games, the sides that complete their groups in the top four will qualify for the quarterfinals.

The quarters and semifinals, set for Oct. 11 and 13, respectively, will be held in Apeldoorn and Gliwice.

The event will end with the third place and final matches in Arnhem on Oct. 15.
