Nigeria romp to victory over toothless Egypt in AFCON opener

A first-half strike by Kelechi Iheanacho gave Nigeria a comfortable win over seven-time champions Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations Group D opener on Tuesday.

The Leicester City striker smashed in a fierce half-volley on the turn from the edge of the box in the 30th minute.

The Super Eagles were only denied a bigger victory by some sharp saves from Egypt’s keeper Mohamed El Shenawy, who twice denied winger Chidera Ejuke and tipped a header by forward Taiwo Awoniyi on to the bar.

Despite the presence of superstar Mohamed Salah up front, Egypt could muster only two shots on target in a game dominated by Nigeria.

Salah had the best chance of the match for the Pharaohs when he was played through with 20 minutes to go, but his scuffed shot was blocked by Nigeria’s keeper Maduka Okoye.

The night’s other Group D game between Sudan and Guinea-Bissau ended in a goalless draw.

Nigeria will face Sudan on Saturday and Egypt take on Guinea-Bissau.

Tuesday's results

Algeria-Sierra Leone: 0-0

Nigeria-Egypt: 1-0

Sudan-Guinea-Bissau: 0-0
