ANKARA

The United States national football team held on for a 2-1 win over Turkey in pre-World Cup friendly in New Jersey on Sunday.

The U.S. side edged to victory thanks to goals by right back Fabian Johnson in the 26th minute and experienced striker Clint Dempsey in the 52nd minute.

Pushing hard for chances to level the game as the clock was ticking down, Turkey pulled a goal back in the 90th minute of the game when central midfielder Selcuk Inan found the net from the penalty spot.

In their previous World Cup warm-up, the USA beat Azerbaijan 2-0 on Wednesday.

The U.S. national team will compete in World Cup Group G, which also features Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
