Football: South Africa knock Egypt out of Africa Cup
Counter-attack in closing stages provides victory for Bafana Bafana; hosts Egypt are out
South Africa are into the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating hosts Egypt 1-0 in Cairo on Saturday evening.
After pushing for the leading goal throughout the match, South Africa found just what they needed in the 85th minute when Thembinkosi Lorch finished the counter-attack calm and collected.
The victory knocked Egypt out of the tournament, while the Bafana Bafana are on their way to the last eight.
In the other match of the day, Nigeria managed to come back from a 1-2 deficit to eliminate Cameroon 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria the lead, but Cameroon took over with Stephane Bakoen and Clinton N'jie inside the first half.
In a four-minute span, Nigeria managed to overturn the deficit and lead the match 3-2 with Ighalo (63rd minute) and Alex Iwobi (66th minute).
On Friday, Benin eliminated Morocco 4-1 on penalties, while Senegal beat Uganda 1-0.
The Round 16 matches will continue on Sunday with Madagascar vs. Democratic Republic of Congo and Algeria vs. Guinea.
