Football: Leverkusen let Spahic go over ‘head-butt’

ANKARA

German top football division Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen released their Bosnian centerback Emir Spahic after head-butting a security staff in German Cup game against Bayern Munich.

The club stated on Sunday that 34-year-old Spahic's contract expiring at the end of 2015-16 season was mutually terminated.

Leverkusen executive Michael Schade said that the surveillance footage lays the incident bare.

"We were shocked and sorry. We discussed with Emir and solved it in a friendly way. Emir feels sorry about that. We wish him good luck,” Schade remarked.

Meanwhile Spahic stated that he is proud of being a part of Bayer Leverkusen and added, "I am sorry about my behavior. I apologize to security staff and their families."

Spahic fought with the security staff after the German Cup quarter-final match where Leverkusen were eliminated by Bayern Munich on penalties. Bosnian defender head-butted a security officer. The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation about the incident.
