ANKARA

A Dec. 8 Champions League match between Atalanta and Villareal was postponed because of snowfall, UEFA said Wednesday. 

"Due to adverse weather conditions, the referee, in conjunction with the UEFA delegate & the teams, has decided to postpone the match between Atalanta & Villarreal in Bergamo," UEFA tweeted.

The match is significant for both sides as one will qualify for the next stage of the Champions League while the other will go to the Europa League playoffs.

The new date and time for the match to be played will soon be announced. it added.

Serie A club Atalanta also tweeted and said: "Atalanta-Villarreal has been postponed due to the heavy snowfall. The match will be played tomorrow with kick-off time still to be determined by UEFA."

Villareal is second in UEFA Champions League Group F with 7 points. Atalanta is third with 6.
