Zelenskyy: Ukraine, Sweden agree on Gripen fleet for long-term security
Ukrainian president hails ‘historic step’ as Europe shows readiness to use frozen Russian assets to support Kyiv
ISTANBUL
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Friday that Ukraine and Sweden have signed the first document for the creation of a Gripen fighter jet fleet, describing the deal as a “historic step” toward strengthening Ukraine’s air power and long-term security.
Zelenskyy said the agreement covers up to 150 Swedish-made Gripen combat aircraft, calling it “a long-term security guarantee for a strong and modern independent Ukraine.”
“We are working for the Gripen fleet, cool combat aircraft. We signed the first document, and we are counting on 150 aircraft,” he said. “This is a historic step. Thank you to everyone who helps us.”
Frozen Russian assets
Zelenskyy highlighted growing political willingness in Europe to redirect frozen Russian assets toward financing Ukraine’s defense and recovery.
“There is a political willingness of Europe to direct frozen Russian assets to fully support Ukraine and Ukrainians,” he said, noting that the European Council had adopted a political decision on the issue.
He added that the plan for using the assets should be implemented by the end of the year, ensuring continued funding for Ukraine in 2026.
The president further welcomed new sanctions against Russia, particularly the US decision to target two major Russian oil companies.
“All members of the Coalition of the Willing agreed that this is exactly how we should continue to put pressure – on Russian oil, on oil companies, on terminals, on the Russian tanker fleet,” he said.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Italy and Norway for new aid packages to support Ukraine’s energy sector, and to Japan’s new prime minister for joining the Coalition of the Willing meeting.
He said Ukraine is also working with partners to secure more Patriot systems and missiles to strengthen air defense.
Europe, he added, “understands that next year, funding for Ukraine, for our people, will be provided.”
