Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Tuesday the formation of an international Energy Coalition to support Ukraine’s energy sector and ensure energy security amid Russian strikes.

Speaking in Kyiv during a meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister David van Wiel, Zelenskyy said the first meeting will take place online in the coming days.

“Recently, after many massive attacks on Ukraine -- on our energy sector, logistics, water supply, gas supply -- a decision was made to organize a coalition to support the energy sector and the energy security of Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy said, according to the state-run Ukrinform news agency.

He noted that the coalition’s mission will be to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and mobilize financial resources for electricity imports if needed.

“Thank God, we are connected to the European energy network, which means we have the capabilities, but we may need financing for imports,” he added.

Zelenskyy thanked the Netherlands for announcing a €25 million ($29 million) energy aid package earlier in the day.

He also said he is in talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to acquire additional power generation equipment.

Following his visit to Norway, the Ukrainian leader said his country would receive about $150 million for winter gas purchases, the third energy support package from Oslo this year.

German Minister of Economics and Energy Katharina Reiche also announced that Germany’s total contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund will reach €450 million.
