BORODYANKA, Ukraine 

Although the Ukrainian army regained control of Borodyanka, it is now a "ruined town" strewn with destroyed buildings and burnt armored vehicles.

Anadolu Agency captured photos of the war-torn town where Russian soldiers were present and there were heavy clashes for weeks until about four days ago.

Burnt armored vehicles can be seen everywhere, while there is no electricity, water, gas or phone service and very few people on the streets.

School buildings, homes and apartments in the town center were severely damaged as a result of air and ground strikes.

A priest was praying in front of a residence in the center of the town, which was destroyed by a Russian air attack.

A 42-year-old mother of three living in Borodyanka said the Russian army carried out heavy attacks during the early days of the war.

Without giving her name, she said her children were hungry as they were unable to venture outside their home.

"The children didn't want to see anyone. We just prayed to God to end the war and prayed for the planes to withdraw."

A senior official, who also declined to disclose his identity, said there were heavy clashes in Borodyanka and that the entire town became uninhabitable.

Meanwhile, there are tanks, armored vehicles, tankers and hundreds of civilian vehicles burning after clashes on the Kyiv-Zhytomyr highway, which provides access to Borodyanka.

Armored vehicles that became unrecognizable during heavy bombardments and the bodies of civilians killed during clashes on the roadside can also be seen.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which started on Feb. 24, has drawn international outrage, with the European Union, US and UK, among others, implementing tough financial sanctions on Moscow.

At least 1,480 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 2,195 injured, according to UN estimates, with the true figure feared to be far higher.

More than 4.24 million Ukrainians have fled to other countries, with millions more internally displaced, according to the UN refugee agency.
