The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) on Friday accused Ukraine of an attack on the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

The Rosatom press service said in a statement that a drone was jammed while it approached one of the power units.

"On September 12, 2025, at 03:52 Moscow time, a combat drone of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was suppressed by technical means in the area of the third power unit on the territory of the Smolensk NPP industrial site," the statement said.

Upon falling, the drone detonated directly near the ventilation pipe of the reactor building of the operational third power unit of the Smolensk NPP, it said.

As a result of the attack, several windows in auxiliary premises were broken, including those of the startup and backup boiler house and the refrigeration station, it said.

Luckily, the attack did not lead to casualties, and the safe operation of the nuclear power plant is ensured; the radiation level at the site is normal, Rosatom noted.

"The incident did not affect the operation of the enterprise. Currently, all three power units at the Smolensk NPP are operating in normal mode. The total capacity is 3,031 MW. The radiation background at the Smolensk NPP industrial site and the adjacent area has not changed and corresponds to natural background levels," Rosatom stated.
