Zelenskyy says Ukraine to map out next steps after Geneva talks
Ukrainian president holds talks over phone with Norwegian, Spanish premiers, says Kyiv's delegations 'returning home' after Geneva talks with US officials
ISTANBUL
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said he expects a detailed report from Kyiv’s delegation on the Geneva talks with US officials “within the next hour,” adding that Ukraine will determine its next steps based on the results and ongoing coordination with European partners.
Zelenskyy said on Telegram that he spoke with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store over the phone and that they discussed the current diplomatic efforts as Kyiv’s delegation “returns home” from Geneva.
He later announced that he also held a phone call with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is in Angola for the EU-African Union Summit, and briefed him on the meetings in Geneva and their initial outcomes.
“Ukraine is receiving significant attention there, and I am grateful for this support,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the involvement of other European leaders in contacts with the American team is “important” as decisions on shared security are being shaped.
“Our delegation is now returning home, and I am expecting a full report … on the progress of the talks in Geneva and the principal emphases of our partners,” he said.
“Based on these reports, we will determine the next steps and the timing. We will continue coordinating with Europe and other partners around the world.”
The phone call comes as senior US and Ukrainian officials held talks in Geneva, Switzerland on the US proposal aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine.
The exchanges involved a US delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, as well as a Ukrainian delegation led by the presidential chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
Following the talks on Sunday, the US and Ukraine drafted an “updated and refined” peace framework, according to a joint statement, saying discussions in this regard showed "meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps."
Earlier in the day, the Kremlin announced that Moscow has yet to receive information from Washington regarding the consultations held in Geneva, adding that Russia will wait for the outcome of the discussions before assessing any possible changes to the document.
