TOKYO

Typhoon Man-yi hit Japan's main island, Honshu, causing floods amid torrential rains, and leaving 2 people dead.

While part of popular tourist destination Kyoto is flooded, more than 100 hundred people have been injured and 400,000 residences in Kyoto, Shiga, Hyogo and Mie were told to evacuate their homes.

The year’s 18th typhoon lashed Japan with wind speeds of 162 kilometers per hour, causing railway companies to suspend their operations and airlines to ground their planes.

Japanese broadcaster NHK said western and centralJapan have so far recorded more than 550 millimeters of rain. 

The typhoon sped up through northeast Japan, arousing anxiety on whether it may damage the crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima. The nuclear plant's operator has increased measures to prevent the typhoon from further damaging the plant. 

Meanwhile, local police announced that they had found the body of a 71-year-old woman after her house collapsed due to a mudslide early Monday and that a 77 year-old woman had died after a mudslide hit her home.
