Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that he is glad Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump is unharmed following an apparent assassination attempt a day earlier.

“I am glad to hear that @realDonaldTrump is safe and unharmed,” Zelenskyy said on X.

Expressing his best wishes to Trump and his family, Zelenskyy said it is “good” that Ryan Routh, detained by law enforcement officers, was quickly apprehended by authorities.

“This is our principle: the rule of law is paramount and political violence has no place anywhere in the world. We sincerely hope that everyone remains safe,” Zelenskyy went on to say.

Trump was the target of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said "appears to be an attempted assassination" at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Law enforcement officials in Florida told reporters that they apprehended a suspect who was spotted by US Secret Service agents with an AK-47-style assault rifle outside Trump’s golf club.

The suspect was identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, The New York Times and Fox News reported, citing unnamed law enforcement officials.
