British citizens want to stay in the EU, a poll released on Wednesday has showed.
Pew Research polled UK citizens about how they would vote in the referendum, proposed by the Conservative-led government, on EU membership, and 55 percent were in favor of remaining part of the bloc.
This marks an increase from 2013, when Pew's poll showed 46 percent wanting to stay in and 46 percent favoring leaving.
Pew took a poll in six European countries on sentiment towards the EU, speaking to 6,000 nationals in total.
In France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom, 61 percent say they have a favorable opinion of the trade bloc. This is up 9 points among the same six countries from 2013. Poles have the most positive view of the EU (72% favorable), as they have for each of the past several years. The British (51%) have the lowest regard for the EU, but even that is up from its low point in 2013.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that a referendum will be held on whether the U.K. should stay in the EU by 2017.
Cameron is demanding reforms from the European Commission that would change the U.K.'s responsibilities to the EU.
