A popular referendum on an amended version of Egypt's 2012 constitution will be held in mid-January, an Egyptian government minister said Tuesday.
The referendum will be conducted nationwide over two days, interim Minister of Administrative Development Hani Mahmoud told the privately-owned CBC satellite TV channel on Monday evening.
Around 53 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in the planned referendum, according to Mahmoud.
Egypt's 2012 constitution – suspended by the army following the July 3 ouster of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military – was approved by 63 percent of voters in a popular referendum held one year ago.
Amendment of the constitution is a central pillar of an army-imposed roadmap for political transition.
Several Islamist groups have already announced their intention to boycott the poll.
