Al-Azhar has condemned the killing of people outside the Republican Guards headquarters in the early hours of Monday.

"I strongly condemn what happened and the killings of people as reported by the media,” Al-Azhar Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayyeb said in a statement.

He urged Egyptian authorities to unveil the reality of what happened and keep the Egyptian people and the public opinion informed about the details of this “painful” incident.

The Egyptian Ambulance Authority (EAO) said 42 people were killed and 322 were wounded outside the Republican Guards HQ.

The army said one officer was killed and several soldiers were wounded in an attempt by “a terrorist group” to storm the HQ.

But the Muslim Brotherhood said at least 53 people, including five children, were killed and hundreds were wounded when army and police forces opened fire on peaceful protesters outside the HQ.

Loyalists of Morsi have been camping outside the building where they think the deposed Islamist president was being held.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was removed from office by the army on July 3 after mass protests against his regime.

The head of the Supreme Constitutional Court was installed in Morsi's place under an army roadmap for Egypt's future, which was supported by El-Tayyeb.
