A Yemeni army officer was killed in clashes with Houthi forces in Yemen’s southwestern province of Taiz, military authorities said Monday.

A military statement said the officer was killed in Daminah on Sunday “while carrying out his duties in defending Taiz city,” without giving further details.

There was no immediate comment from the Houthis on the statement.

Clashes have raged between government forces and Houthi forces in Taiz and other Yemeni provinces in recent weeks, killing and injuring dozens.

Despite intermittent clashes, Yemen has largely seen a state of relative calm since April 2022 following a war that began more than 11 years ago between forces loyal to the internationally recognized government and Houthi forces, who have controlled several provinces and cities, including the capital Sanaa, since September 2014.
