Qatar denies reassessing security partnership with US, says ties with Washington ‘stronger than ever’

ISTANBUL

Qatar denied media reports Thursday about reassessing security relations with the US, stressing that ties with Washington are “stronger than ever.”

“The claim reported by Axios citing an anonymous 'informed' source that the State of Qatar is reassessing its security partnership with the United States is baseless,” Qatar’s International Media Office said in a statement on the US social media company X.

Axios earlier claimed that Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman told the White House that Doha would “reevaluate its security partnership with Washington,” following an Israeli strike on the capital.

The media office called the media report “a desperate attempt to harm the strong relationship” between the two countries.

“The security and defense partnership between the State of Qatar and the United States is stronger than ever and will continue to grow,” the statement said.

The office affirmed that Qatar will continue to work with the US “to promote international peace and stability.”

On Tuesday, Israeli warplanes launched an airstrike targeting Hamas leadership in Doha, killing five group members. Hamas confirmed that its leadership had survived the Israeli attack.

Qatar condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and a blatant violation of international law, warning it would not tolerate Israel’s “reckless behavior.”

Qatar, along with Egypt and the US, has been mediating to end the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, where more than 64,700 people have been killed since October 2023.
