Oman calls attack on Iran’s South Pars field ‘direct threat’ to energy supplies
Omani Foreign Ministry calls for immediate cessation of hostilities
ISTANBUL
Oman strongly condemned an attack on energy infrastructure at Iran’s South Pars field as a “dangerous escalation” and a “direct threat” to the security of the region as well as energy supplies.
This attack “is a violation of international laws and norms, and a direct threat to the security of the region and energy supplies,” Oman’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It underlined the need “to adhere to international laws and norms by avoiding attacks on civilian facilities and infrastructure, and working towards an immediate cessation of hostilities and containing their repercussions.”
Iranian media on Wednesday reported a US-Israeli airstrike on gas storage tanks at the field in the southern city of Asaluyeh, halting production at two refineries with a combined capacity of about 100 million cubic meters per day.
Hostilities have raged since Israel and the US launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, so far killing around 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.
