Jordan’s king starts overseas trip to meet Trump after Gaza takeover proposal

AMMAN, Jordan

Jordan’s King Abdullah II started an overseas trip on Thursday to meet officials in the UK and US, including US President Donald Trump.

A statement by the royal court said the monarch will first visit London, which will be followed by a working visit to Boston and Washington, DC, in the US.

The statement did not provide details about the schedule for his official trip.

The royal court said on Sunday said the king will meet with Trump at the White House on Feb. 11, becoming the first Arab leader to meet the US president since he assumed office last month.

The visit comes after Trump triggered uproar on Tuesday by suggesting to take over the Gaza Strip and resettle its people elsewhere during a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

His proposal was met with wide condemnations from the Palestinians, Arab countries and many other nations across the world, including Canada, France, Germany and the UK.

Since Jan. 25, Trump has repeatedly suggested that Palestinians in Gaza should be taken in by regional Arab nations such as Egypt and Jordan, an idea rejected by both the Arab states and Palestinian leaders.

Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians in Gaza first came after a ceasefire agreement took effect in the enclave on Jan. 19, suspending Israel’s genocidal war, which has killed more than 47,500 Palestinians and left the enclave in ruins.
