The Israeli army shelled a Hamas position in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, according to an Israeli army statement.

"A short time ago, the IDF [Israeli Defense Forces] attacked a Hamas outpost in the northern Gaza Strip in response to their bombing of our forces,” the statement read.

There has been no immediate response from Hamas to the army’s assertion.

The alleged shelling comes two days after 62 Palestinian demonstrators were martyred -- and hundreds more injured -- by Israeli troops deployed near the Gaza-Israel fence.

Monday's rally near the fence had coincided with Israel's 70th anniversary -- an event Palestinians refer to as "The Catastrophe" -- and the relocation of Washington's Israel embassy to Jerusalem, which took place the same day.

Since the Gaza rallies first kicked off on Mar. 30, more than 100 Palestinian demonstrators have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire.
