Israel extends detention of ex-military prosecutor over leaked video of tortured Palestinian detainee

JERUSALEM / ISTANBUL

An Israeli court in Tel Aviv on Wednesday extended the detention of former military prosecutor Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi until Friday, marking the second extension since her arrest over the leak of a video showing Israeli soldiers assaulting and torturing a Palestinian detainee at the army’s Sde Teiman camp in southern Israel.

The court approved Tomer-Yerushalmi’s request to attend the remand hearing via Zoom instead of appearing in person, Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reported.

According to KAN, the former prosecutor has faced an escalation of threats and incitement from right-wing Israeli figures in recent days.

Tomer-Yerushalmi was first arrested and held until Wednesday, before the new extension was granted.

Defense Minister Israel Katz dismissed Tomer-Yerushalmi on Saturday and stripped her of her rank, even though she had already submitted her resignation.

In a resignation letter on Friday, she said she authorized media publication of the video “to counter false propaganda against the military justice system,” according to Israeli media.

The leaked footage, showing five soldiers assaulting a detainee from Gaza, has triggered domestic and international outrage since it surfaced last week.

There are currently over 10,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons, including women and children, who face torture, starvation, and medical neglect, conditions that have caused numerous deaths, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations.
