Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government says 3 drones downed in Erbil

ERBIL, Iraq

Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) said late Monday that three drones were shot down in Erbil, following reports of explosions.

The KRG's counter-terrorism service said in a statement that debris from one of the drones fell near the consulate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the city.

The UAE's Foreign Ministry condemned the drone attack on its consulate.

Separately, the Erbil Water and Sewerage Directorate said in a statement that the building affected by the falling debris is located near Erbil International Airport. It said explosions occurred as air defense systems intercepted the drones.

The blasts damaged two staff vehicles and the roofs of two rooms in the administrative building, according to the statement.

“As a result, we will temporarily relocate our employees to another location,” the directorate said.

Erbil has experienced frequent explosions and air defense activity since Iran began retaliatory attacks following US and Israeli strikes which began late last month.
