Iraqi forces on Saturday seized control of the Shura region, south of Mosul, from Daesh militants, the Iraqi army said.

In a statement, the army said the Iraqi flag has been raised on all government institutions in the area.

The new development comes as the Iraqi army pressed ahead with a major offensive to recapture the northern city of Mosul from the Daesh group.

The terrorist group captured Iraq’s second largest city in mid-2014 before overrunning large swathes of territory in the country’s northern and western regions.
