RAMALLAH, Palestine

At least 8 Palestinians were injured by Israeli gunfire during raids in the city of Ramallah, occupied West Bank on Monday.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said it provided medical treatment to the wounded, adding that one was injured live fire, while the others got hurt from rubber bullets and tear gas grenades.

Confrontations erupted when the Israeli army raided the cities of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, witnesses said, adding that the forces detained two doctors and a paramedic from Ramallah before withdrawing.

Tensions have been high across the West Bank since fighting broke out in Gaza after the Oct. 7 cross-border offensive by Hamas.

A UN report released in late December detailed the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and called on Israel to end unlawful killings and settler violence against the Palestinian population.

It called for an immediate end to the use of military weapons and means during law enforcement operations, an end to arbitrary detention and ill-treatment of Palestinians, and the lifting of discriminatory movement restrictions.

Violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers in the territory has reached record highs, according to the UN.
