At least 22 people were killed and 16 others injured when two residential buildings collapsed in northern Morocco early Wednesday, according to local media.

The official news agency MAP, citing local authorities, said that two adjacent four-story buildings, housing eight families, collapsed in the Al-Massira neighborhood of Fes.

State-run channel 2M said that civil defense teams continued working at the scene to search for survivors.

No details were provided on the cause of the incident.

The injured were taken to the hospital, while nearby homes were evacuated, according to the news agency.

Public prosecutors ordered an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

It said in a statement that one of the buildings was unoccupied, while the second was hosting an “aqiqa” celebration (a ritual feast marking the birth of a child) at the time of the collapse.
