Senegal set to appeal losing AFCON title to CAS
Senegal Football Federation condemns recent decision as 'unjust, unprecedented and unacceptable,' arguing such actions bring entirety of African football into disrepute
ISTANBUL
The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) confirmed on Wednesday that it would file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after being stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
In the statement, the Federation condemned the recent decision as "unjust, unprecedented and unacceptable," arguing that such actions bring the entirety of African football into disrepute.
"To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the federation will, as soon as possible, file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne," it added.
Final officially recorded as 3-0 victory for Morocco
The final, which took place on Jan. 18 in Rabat, Morocco, ended with Senegal winning 1-0 in extra time following a chaotic stoppage late in normal time.
Senegal’s players left the pitch in protest after Morocco were awarded a penalty during stoppage time while the match was goalless.
After a delay of more than 15 minutes, play eventually resumed, and Senegal missed the penalty before scoring the winning goal in extra time.
Morocco's football federation subsequently filed an appeal challenging the outcome, arguing Senegal’s walk-off constituted a breach of tournament regulations.
CAF's Appeal Board accepted the appeal and annulled the previous disciplinary ruling, declaring Senegal to have forfeited the final and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.
