US House to put rescissions bill on floor next week: Speaker Johnson
White House sent Congress a request to claw back $9.4 billion in funding for foreign aid and to public broadcasting
WASHINGTON
The US House of Representatives will put the rescissions bill on the floor next week, Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday.
"Today, the House has officially received the rescissions request from the White House to eliminate $9.4 billion in wasteful foreign aid spending at the State Department and USAID and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS," Johnson said in a statement.
His remarks came after the White House sent a formal request to Congress on Tuesday to claw back funding for NPR, PBS and international aid that lawmakers had previously approved.
Johnson said the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) identified "this wasteful spending" by the federal government.
"House Republicans will fulfill our mandate and continue codifying into law a more efficient federal government," he added.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday that the rescissions package is another item high on the upper chamber's list to begin work on in June.
The package needs only a simple majority to pass in each chamber.
