Moscow's role in easing Iran-US tensions goes beyond 'pure mediation': Senior Russian diplomat

MOSCOW

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Thursday that Moscow's role in easing tensions between Iran and the US extends beyond "pure mediation."

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Ryabkov emphasized that Russia is engaged in active dialogue with all parties involved, offering practical solutions across multiple fronts.

Ryabkov pointed to ongoing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as initiatives such as the transfer of enriched uranium from Iran to Russia for conversion into nuclear fuel.

"Our role goes beyond mediation. It's not merely about providing good services or conveying signals from one party to another, though that's part of it too. What really counts is our contribution toward stabilizing the situation by helping find solutions," he said.

"There are many more examples. Work along those lines continues within the framework of the IAEA as well. So, mediation is just one element, one segment of our overall efforts. We intend to continue making corresponding efforts going forward," he said.

Shifting focus to relations with the US, Ryabkov expressed confidence that Moscow and Washington will soon finalize plans for a third round of bilateral consultations.

During these talks, both countries aim to address persistent "bilateral issues often referred to as irritants," he said, adding: "There is no slowdown in advancing the bilateral agenda with the US, there's a technical pause."
