Germany in talks with US to purchase Patriot systems for Ukraine
Chancellor Merz says Germany talking with US to acquire additional defense systems for Ukraine against Russian aerial attacks

BERLIN
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced talks Thursday to purchase Patriot air defense systems from the US to support Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Merz emphasized at a news conference after the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome the need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities against Russian attacks.
"I am in close communication with the US administration and President Trump regarding this matter. Germany continues its support for Ukraine in this area," Merz told reporters.
"We are prepared to acquire additional Patriot systems from the US to provide them to Ukraine. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius are actively coordinating with our partners to mobilize additional aid."
The Conservative leader did not specify the number of systems Germany plans to purchase but emphasized Berlin’s commitment to Ukraine.
Merz also stated that the EU will implement a new sanctions package to heighten political pressure on Russia.
He described the Rome meeting as successful, noting that they had delivered a clear message to Russia. "Moscow must understand that we will not give up. That is not an option," he said, adding that they also expect the Trump administration to maintain its support for Ukraine.
"The US administration and the American president should stay with us. This is the right side of history. I would greatly appreciate it if the American administration sees it the same way," said Merz.
