Ukraine’s chief negotiator meets US envoys in Davos, ahead of Putin meeting in Russia
‘Main topics were economic development, post-war recovery, security guarantees,’ says National Security and Defense Council Secretary Umerov
ISTANBUL
Ukraine's chief negotiator met with envoys of US President Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland, as the latter are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday for continued talks on a settlement for the nearly four-year Moscow-Kyiv war.
Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, who was appointed as the chief negotiator in November last year, wrote on Telegram that a meeting took place with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
“The main topics were economic development, post-war recovery, and security guarantees,” Umerov said, noting he briefed Ukraine’s partners on the latest Russian attacks, including the situation in Kyiv.
Umerov noted that he, together with Davyd Arakhamia, the parliamentary leader of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party, and former Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin, also met with representatives of multinational investment company BlackRock.
He added that he also met with the prime ministers of Norway and Qatar.
The meeting comes as Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to meet with Putin in the Russian capital on Thursday to continue dialogue on trying to find a settlement for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In remarks to CNBC at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Wednesday, Witkoff said there has been "lots of progress in the last six to eight weeks" with regard to a settlement in Ukraine, and that he and Kushner will meet with Ukrainian officials on Wednesday evening before meeting with top Russian officials.
He said the Kremlin had requested the talks in Moscow, and they hopefully will have "something good to announce soon."
Both Steve and Kushner have held multiple meetings with Putin, as well as Ukrainian delegations, aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which is set to enter its fifth year next month.
Russian Envoy Kirill Dmitriev told journalists on Tuesday that he had "constructive" talks with Witkoff and Kushner after their meeting on the sidelines of the WEF.
