Green Party leader Zack Polanski on Tuesday called on the UK government to “immediately and unequivocally” suspend all military support for the US, following escalating threats from US President Donald Trump.
His remarks came after Trump earlier on Tuesday threatened that “a whole civilization will die tonight” as his deadline for a ceasefire agreement with Iran approached.
In a message posted on the US social media platform X, Polanski urged urgent action, warning that the current situation could have severe global consequences.
“The UK must immediately and unequivocally suspend support for the US military,” Polanski said.
He criticized the government’s approach, adding: “The government has tried to appease him, then they tried to say they’re standing up to him. Words aren’t enough — it’s time for action.”
Polanski also raised concerns about the potential for a wider conflict, stating: “We're on the verge of a genocidal nuclear war that our supposed ‘ally’ has said he's ready to unleash.”
He questioned the response from the Prime Minister, saying: “Would it be too much to ask for the Prime Minister to have something to say about it? Or do? Suspend US bases now.”
Earlier, Trump threatened to bomb power stations and bridges across Iran if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach an agreement by Tuesday night at 8 p.m. EDT (0000 GMT Wednesday).
Regional escalations have continued since Israel and the US launched an offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,400 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure and disrupting global markets and aviation.
