UK court rules consent for new oil, gas fields in North Sea granted 'unlawfully'

LONDON

A Scottish court on Thursday ruled that the consent for both the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields was granted unlawfully, a major win for climate campaigners.

At the Scottish Court of Sessions, the judge said that the private interest of members of the public in climate change "outweigh the private interest of the developers."

The previous Conservative government acted "unlawfully" when it gave permission to the offshore Rosebank oilfield and Jackdaw gas project, the court ruled.

The ruling came on a legal challenge by Uplift and Greenpeace groups which welcomed the ruling and urged the government to make a fresh decision on these North Sea fields, taking into account their full climate impact.

A group of climate activists gathered outside the court as the judgment was being announced.

"We’ve WON a historic case against the Rosebank & Jackdaw oil & gas fields," Greenpeace said on X, expressing that this "game-changing" development means "no new oil and gas."
