Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday voiced support for the exclusion of Israel and Russia from international sports competitions "until the barbarity ends."

"Our position is clear and firm. Until the barbarity ends, neither Russia nor Israel should take part in any more international competitions," Sanchez said in a news conference.

Stressing that Israel and Russia are undermining human rights and international law, he said that the vast majority of Spanish citizens, regardless of how they vote, share the same position grounded in common sense.

"Why was Russia expelled after the invasion of Ukraine and Israel is not expelled after the invasion of Gaza?" Sanchez asked, urging sports organizations to question whether it is ethical for Israel to continue participating in international competitions.

His remarks came after the final stage of the La Vuelta cycling race was canceled on Sunday after pro-Palestinian protests disrupted the race in central Madrid.

The 80th edition of Spain's premier cycling event was halted around 57 kilometers from the finish line as demonstrators occupied streets along the planned route.

"We feel, as I said yesterday, deep admiration and respect for our athletes (...) We also feel immense respect and deep admiration for a Spanish civil society that mobilizes against injustice and defends its ideas peacefully," Sanchez said.
