Russia, Ukraine release over 200 prisoners of war on New Year’s Eve

MOSCOW/KYIV

Russia and Ukraine on Saturday released more than 200 prisoners of war on New Year’s Eve.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that 82 Russian soldiers had been freed by Ukraine, while Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the president of Ukraine, said Russia released 140 Ukrainians.

“Another large prisoners swap was successfully carried out – 140 (Ukrainian) citizens are returning home,” Yermak said o Twitter.

The two countries have exchanged hundreds of captured soldiers in several rounds of prisoner exchanges in recent months.
