LONDON
Scotland saw a new record high of 28,944 open homeless applications in September 2022, the highest number since Scottish government records started in 2002.
The figure, announced on Tuesday, is up 11% compared to the previous year.
There were 19,066 homelessness applications received during the six months to the end of September, marking a 6% rise from last year, and slightly higher than pre-pandemic figures.
There was also a sharp increase in the number of children being housed in temporary accommodation year-on-year, up 10% to 9,130.
The latest data also showed that 19% of households became homeless from private rented tenancies in the period April to September 2022, up 14%.
Housing Secretary Shona Robison called the figures worrying, adding that the Scottish government had commissioned an action plan to solve the problem.
