BIRMINGHAM, England

Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Harris on Wednesday won a motion of confidence in parliament by a vote of 94 to 65, with one abstention.

The government brought forward the motion of confidence in Harris, who is also the deputy prime minister.

The vote came after the opposition party, Auntu, demanded a no-confidence motion against Harris due to a “failed promise” on child spinal surgeries and overall “dysfunction” in Children’s Health Ireland (CHI).

While facing criticisms on domestic issues, Harris has been carrying out an active diplomacy on international matters, primarily those involving Israel’s war on Gaza.

The Irish broadcaster RTE reported Tuesday that Ireland will commit "millions of euros" in the coming months to fund the reconstruction of Gaza.

Harris is expected to tell the Cabinet that preparations are underway for a major Irish aid package to support Gaza, following Ireland’s decision to join the Emergency Coalition for the Financial Sustainability of the Palestinian Authority.

He will also announce that a consignment of 1,500 tents bound for Gaza includes 750 tents from Ireland’s humanitarian stocks.

The government has already announced an additional €6 million ($7 million) in humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, bringing Ireland’s total contribution since 2023 to over €100 million ($115 million).
