Moldova’s future lies in European Union: French President Macron
EU accession path is demanding but offers 'historic chance for prosperity and security' for Moldovans, says Emmanuel Macron

ISTANBUL
French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated Paris’ firm support for Moldova’s EU membership aspirations, declaring that the country’s future is inseparable from Europe.
Speaking at celebrations in Chisinau to mark the 34th anniversary of Moldova’s independence, Macron stood alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
He said their joint presence is a symbol of Europe’s solidarity with Moldova at a time when its sovereignty and democracy face challenges.
“It appeared essential to us to come and celebrate this symbolic day, marking Moldova’s entry into an era of sovereignty and regained freedom,” Macron said.
“We wish to send the Moldovan people a message of respect, friendship, solidarity, and confidence in the future.”
Macron underlined that Moldova, which formally applied for EU membership three years ago, has taken “a historic step” by enshrining its European orientation in its constitution last year.
He stressed that while the EU accession process is difficult, it provides Moldovans with "a historic chance for prosperity and security."
“The Moldovan people have understood that accession to the European Union represents a chance for the modernization of their country, for opportunities for youth and economic actors, and access to a market of 450 million consumers,” he said.
He praised Moldova’s progress on reforms, particularly in the justice system and economic modernization, and highlighted that the EU has recently approved the disbursement of the first payments under a €1.9 billion growth and reform plan.
France, Macron added, would continue to provide technical expertise, financial support, and cultural cooperation, citing projects in energy, infrastructure, education, and heritage restoration.
He announced a new double degree program in law between the Sorbonne and Moldova State University, as well as the restoration of historic buildings in Chisinau.
Turning to regional security, Macron criticized Russia’s war against Ukraine and dismissed Kremlin claims that the EU sought to prolong the conflict or oppress nations.
“These are lies,” he said. “Unlike Russia, the European Union threatens no one. It is an alliance of prosperity and peace, where sovereignty is respected.”
Macron also emphasized that Moldova’s European path is also a commitment to peace, democracy, and dignity.
“Being by your side today is both a tribute to your people and a reaffirmation of the common confidence we share in Moldova’s future in the European Union,” he said.
