Lithuanian lawmakers seek to revoke citizenship of Russia supporters
Proposed bill targets dual nationals accused of aiding foreign states that threaten EU or violate international law

ATHENS
Lithuanian lawmakers have introduced a bill that would strip dual citizens of their Lithuanian nationality if they are found supporting Russia or any foreign state deemed a threat to Lithuania or its allies, Baltic News Agency reported Monday.
The draft legislation would apply to individuals who support or take part in actions by foreign governments that violate international law or undermine the security interests of Lithuania, other EU member states, or allied countries.
Under the proposal, such individuals would be barred from acquiring, restoring, retaining or regaining Lithuanian citizenship. Those already holding dual citizenship could have it revoked.
Dalia Asanaviciute, a conservative lawmaker and one of the bill’s co-authors, told the agency that some dual nationals use their Lithuanian status to bypass sanctions targeting Russian citizens.
“They’re not seeking Lithuanian citizenship out of patriotism or a connection to their roots, but to evade sanctions,” she said.
“I believe extending the criteria is the right step. It would also put all dual citizens on an equal footing when it comes to accountability.”
